Threads is becoming a more independent advertising channel. Starting in September 2026, Meta says a matching username between a Threads profile and an Instagram profile is no longer required to run Threads ads. A business without an Instagram presence can also use its native Threads profile to advertise. The change is rolling out gradually, so an individual ad account may not yet have the option.
An identity change, not proof of campaign performance
Until now, the shared identity requirement made Threads campaigns feel like an extension of Instagram. The new setup makes it easier to test a distinct brand voice and a text-first creative brief. But it does not establish that Threads delivers cheaper leads or more sales than Instagram; audience, placement and measurement still need separate evaluation.
Meta documents the change in its business help article, although the public page may require login. Social Media Today reported the rollout on 21 September 2026.
Karim's strategic takeaway
For a healthcare marketer, test a professional Q&A or expert-opinion message on Threads against a visual-first Instagram campaign. Use a dedicated landing page and qualified-lead or booking event, not reach alone. Confirm the option is actually available in the intended Ads Manager account before promising a launch date, and apply the usual medical-claim review to any patient-facing copy.
